Coach’s Blog – Paul Matthews

During this difficult time it is important that we at Pontypridd RFC are prepared and ready to transition back into rugby when the time is right for us, something I know we will do smoothly and effectively when called upon.

Reflection on last year is very important and allows an evaluation of our areas of strength, here we can build upon some impressive performances but we know there are certain elements of our game where we need to do better. Hopefully some of the new breakdown rules that have become an area of focus will benefit us and referees will now reward what has always been our positive style of play in this area.

It is fantastic to have Dafydd Lockyer as captain once again and we are excited to see some of our experienced players return to fitness to guide our pool of developing young players, all who have a common goal of ensuring Pontypridd RFC are successful and challenging for honours. It was disappointing that last season was cut short as many of those young players were ready to break through and challenge during the proposed cross-border competition.

We are thankful to all our NHS staff associated with the club for their contribution during this tough time and it is great to see us supporting the cause directly with our new jersey. Also my condolences go out to some of our fantastic supporters who have lost loved ones during this period. To quote ex Ponty player Richard Parks who recently said to a group of my pupils that “tough times don’t last, tough people do” and we have always had some tough, determined people at this club.

These times have put various different strains upon people in different ways, home schooling whilst working from home being one for me. It is important that we work together supporting each other in a greater way than before as we look forward to the day when rugby returns at Sardis Road.
