On Saturday 17th August Pontypridd will host Premiership rivals
Llandovery at Sardis Road.

This has by now become a regular pre-season encounter, cementing
the bond of mutual respect that exists between the two clubs.

The Pontypridd RFC squad is currently taking time out before
pre-season training commences during the second week in July. That
time out however is not given over to idling about as all the
players have a strict fitness regime to adhere to.

The late finish to the previous season, with the crunch
Premiership Play-Off Final played on 18th May, saw the Ponty squad
giving their all right to the final whistle of a long and arduous
campaign and then in need of a well earned rest.

"With the SWALEC Cup and Play-Off Finals to contest we were
three weeks or so later than most other clubs finishing our
season" explained Pontypridd conditioning coach Darren Bool.
"The boys deserved a break after their exploits but will now
need to catch up in terms of pre-season preparation."

The squad have been given fitness programmes to work to during
June, with many already making good use of the newly opened
facilities at the Elite Body Conditioning gym in Cilfynydd, managed
by Ponty players Geraint Walsh and Owen Sheppeard.

An important date in the pre-season calendar will be Saturday
6th July, when the Pontypridd squad report to the WRU base at the
Vale Resort in Hensol to be conditioning tested by Union
officials.

"A new procedure this season sees all Premiership clubs
undergoing conditioning tests to WRU standards" said Darren
Bool. "We welcome this as step forward and have already been
gearing our close season work to cardio vascular and power
exercises in line with those requirements."

On the following Tuesday evening 9th July the Pontypridd squad
will assemble for formal pre-season training as the build up to
another winter's campaign gets underway.

The latest recruit to the Pontypridd RFC senior squad is flanker
Luke Crocker who joins up from neighbouring club Beddau.

An abrasive back rower, Crocker was nominated Player of the Year
and Players' Player of the Year for Beddau last season, being a
key performer for the club in its Championship campaign and in
winning the Mid District Cup at Sardis Road.

Cardiff born and a product of the Canton club, Luke Crocker is
aged twenty-three and stands at 6ft 2in. Having gained experience
in playing across the back row, Crocker comes to Pontypridd as a
recognised blind side flanker.

In announcing the new signing, Pontypridd team manager Richard
Langmead commented:

"Luke is a big, aggressive back row player who has made his
mark in the Championship and has the potential to make the step up
to Premiership level. We are delighted to have him on board, and
look forward to see him develop that potential to the full with
Pontypridd."

Lloyd Williams was initially drafted in on permit as scrum half
cover from Treorchy RFC during the season just gone and impressed
with his dynamic style of play and swift service to the back
line.

His contribution for Pontypridd was a telling one, making ten
appearances in all including as second half replacement in the
SWALEC Cup Final and a starting role in the Premiership Play-Off
Final.

Aged just twenty-one Lloyd Williams will undoubtedly prove
to be a significant addition to the Pontypridd RFC squad.

Defending league and cup champions Pontypridd

Defending league and cup champions Pontypridd
RFC will carry the main bulk of its squad into the next season,
with the objective that an established pool of players can emulate
the significant successes of the previous campaign.

Ponty's winning habit was underpinned by a
selection policy of rest and rotation amongst a talented squad
within which every single member played a part. The news that the
squad will remain mostly intact into the forthcoming campaign will
bolster the club's hopes of further success.

There are some departures to report. Flanker
Ed Siggery, after a brief one season return to Sardis Road, moves
on again to join up with newly promoted English Championship club
Ealing Trailfinders. Released by Pontypridd at the close of the
season is scrum half Carl Thomas.

Two Blues Academy players who featured
regularly for Ponty over the past months, hooker Darran Harris and
lock Cory Hill, have meanwhile been released from their regional
contracts. Harris will join up with the Scarlets whilst Hill has
signed for English Championship club Moseley.

All four departees go with the sincere thanks
and best wishes of all at Sardis Road.

The core Pontypridd RFC squad that remains in
harness for the 2013 - 2014 season is as follows:

Backs:

Geraint Walsh. Adam Thomas. Gareth Wyatt.
Chris Clayton. Matthew Nuthall. Lewis Williams. Owen Williams.
Gavin Dacey. Gary Williams. Dafydd Lockyer. Simon Humberstone. Dai
Flanagan. Gareth James.

Forwards:

Scott Roberts. Stuart Williams. Chris
Phillips. Keiron Jenkins. Pat Palmer. Huw Dowden. Craig Locke.
Chris Dicomidis. Dafydd Davies. Jordan Sieniawski. Jake Thomas.

Pontypridd approached the new season in confident mood,

significantly boosted as a number of high profile additions to the

Pontypridd approached the new season in confident mood,
justifiably so as Premiership champions and losing SWALEC Cup
finalists. That confidence amongst the club supporters was
significantly boosted as a number of high profile additions to the
squad were made over the summer months.

Returning to the ranks following spells away on professional
contracts elsewhere were outside half Dai Flanagan, prop Scott
Roberts and flankers Ed Siggery and Rhys Shellard. The signing of
experienced tight head prop Keiron Jenkins from Bedwas and hugely
promising full back Geraint Walsh from Loughborough University also
added to the squad's overall strength.

An arguably low key build up to the new season saw Pontypridd
record comfortable, entertaining home wins over Ystrad Rhondda and
Llantrisant before travelling away to meet Premiership rivals
Llandovery. A close fought 19pts to 20 win in that friendly match
gave an indication of the challenges to come, and Ponty's
ability to overcome them.

A stiff test awaited in the first league tie of the season away
to SWALEC Cup holders and British & Irish Cup finalists Cross
Keys. Ponty hit the ground running against an ill disciplined Keys
side and came away with a morale boosting 3pts to 28 win. The month
of September continued to go well, with a first ever away win at
Carmarthen recorded, and ending with an unprecedented 15pts
to 64 drubbing of Neath at the Gnoll.

October came with the first forays into the cross border BIC
competition. A disappointing away draw at Jersey was offset by an
epic home win over Irish provincial side Leinster A who had in
their ranks a number of senior and A internationals. Back in the
Premiership Pontypridd lost away to Newport by a single
point, a result which was to stand out in time as the solitary
league defeat of the campaign.

The dark winter days leading up to the year's end were lit
up by a resurgent Pontypridd who played attractive attacking rugby
and swept all before them, registering further wins in the league
and beating English Championship side Leeds Carnegie home and away
in the BIC. A policy of squad rotation allowed players to rest,
recover and be restored to the starting line up in dynamic form,
and it was working admirably well against all opposition.

On the second weekend of 2013 Pontypridd and an army of
dedicated support travelled to Dublin to face Leinster in a crunch
BIC pool tie. It was a game which could have been won according to
the possession and territory stats, but in which the Irish
team's strike players earned a 21pts to 9 win, effectively
ending Ponty's interest in the competition.

Undaunted Pontypridd returned to domestic duties and registered
a fine away victory at Llanelli to progress in the SWALEC Cup. The
wins just kept coming in the league, often appended by bonus points
as Ponty's attacking endeavours were rewarded with tries
scored.

Riding high in the Premiership, at the end of March Pontypridd
travelled to Ebbw Vale for a SWALEC Cup quarter final tie for an
eagerly awaited reunion with a fellow valleys club of similar
values. Having originally been postponed due to a snow bound Eugene
Cross Park the key encounter eventually took place and posted a
significant marker in the progress of the season.

Ponty were given a hard time by a fully committed Ebbw Vale team
who led for long periods of the game and undeniably could claim a
moral victory. A late Chris Dicomidis try unnervingly converted
from the touchline by Dai Flanagan secured victory for Ponty
by 22pts to 23. A real test of character had been overcome, and the
season could move on with everything still to play for.

An away league win at Cardiff by 35pts to 7 saw Ponty play some
champagne rugby to celebrate an unassailable lead in the table. The
following weekend in contrast saw the team slugging out a narrow
18pts to 16 cup semi final win over Carmarthen in the waterlogged
conditions of the Talbot Athletic Ground.

Now into the final lap of a long campaign, Ponty were in cruise
control through April with a series of bonus point league wins, and
a historic domestic double in their sights.

A resurgent Neath were the opponents in the SWALEC Cup Final on
4th May at the Millennium Stadium. Pontypridd were slow to move up
the gears against a stubborn All Blacks side, but a second half
awakening saw the Valley Commandos claim the trophy with a 34pts to
13 win.

A two week delay ensued before Ponty could defend the
Premiership crown, and would do so for the third time running
against a Llanelli team made up of regional academy players well
capable of spoiling any party at Sardis Road.

The two teams had already met on three occasions with Pontypridd
victorious in the SWALEC Cup and the league games, home and away.
Such form would count for little in a one off Premiership decider.
A boisterous crowd of over 5,000 turned up at the House of Pain to
watch the big game, as did tens of thousands more on their S4C TV
screens. They were not disappointed with the quality and the
stature of the contest.

Playing dynamic rugby, highly physical and with attacking skills
complementing their defensive resolve, Pontypridd won the
Premiership crown in style with a five try, 47pts to 15
victory.

A phenomenally successful season had come to a close, history
had been made, Pontypridd RFC were the double champions of Welsh
rugby.

CEO's end of season statement

We have just witnessed arguably the most

We have just witnessed arguably the most
successful season in the history of Pontypridd RFC, joining that
elite band of only a few clubs to achieve a league and cup ‘double’
and, losing only one match in the British and Irish Cup to eventual
winners Leinster ‘A’.

I know that you will join me in congratulating
and thanking our Team Management, Coaches, Club Captain and Playing
Squad not only for their success, but also for the style in which
they achieved it.

Furthermore, I would like to express my grateful
appreciation to you, the catalyst that helps make the team ‘tick’,
the dedicated and outstanding support that has travelled the length
and breadth of these islands from Leeds to Leinster to Jersey.

As our Club Captain, Chris Dicomidis said after
securing the ‘double’, ‘this isn’t the end, it is the beginning’.
Pontypridd RFC has unbridled ambition and unfinished business in
the British and Irish Cup! To that end we need your invaluable and
continued support.

Season Ticket applications for 2013 - 2014 are
now being taken. Unlike 2012-13, we cannot include the British and
Irish Cup home fixtures in the 2013-14 season ticket package. The
inclusion of Pontypridd RFC in the 2013/14 BIC competition is
dependent upon qualification; the play-off fixture will take place
against Cardiff RFC at Sardis Road in September 2013.

As many of you will be aware, since resurgence
from humble beginnings in 2003, Ponty Rugby Limited has strived to
improve the quality of the ‘Sardis Rugby Experience’. Despite the
down-sizing of the premier league and changes to the cup
competition during the last few seasons (reduction in home fixtures
equals reduction in gate receipts) Ponty Rugby Limited has been
able to invest in improving conditions for our supporters, members
and players.

This has included such projects as replacing the
aged boilers in the Clubhouse central heating system and in the
showers in the changing rooms under the Grandstand. In order to
generate additional income that is significant enough to initiate
major capital expenditure projects such as upgrading the pitch or
the floodlights for example, the club has initiated the BOSS scheme
in order to provide you with the opportunity to contribute not only
to the funding but to have your say in the decision making process.
The details of the scheme and a video are available on the website
www.ponty.net/boss-the-ponty-rugby-shares-scheme
Please take the time to read it and give it serious consideration,
you can make a difference to what Ponty Rugby Limited is aiming to
achieve in the near future.

Once again, thank you for your support this
season which is truly the envy of every premiership club (and quite
a few of the RFU Championship clubs too).

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Reardon

The season has come to an end and Pontypridd RFC can proudly
claim the status of Swalec Cup and Premiership champions. To mark
the success of the season, on Tuesday 21st May the club were
invited to travel to London to meet local MP Owen Smith.

Captain Chris Dicomidis along with Ed Siggery and Adam Thomas
travelled up on the coach to represent the players, along with many
of Pontypridd’s corporate team, including Directors, Supporter’s
Club members and long-term Sponsors of the club.

When the delegation arrived in London they were immediately
shown into Portcullis House, which was built in 1992 to provide
more offices for the Houses of Parliament, located just opposite
the main Parliament building.

The club was allocated a room to meet and greet Owen Smith and
other South Wales representatives such as Nia Griffiths and Wayne
David. Owen Smith made a very passionate speech in recognition of
Pontypridd RFC’s successful season and described himself as the
“biggest Ponty fan.” He described the reason for the whole day as a
“celebration of a season that has been absolutely unparalleled.” He
started by thanking the club and gave recognition to all of the
long-standing sponsors who are key to Pontypridd’s success.

Mr Smith then went on to praise the statistics of the team
winning all but two games in the entire season and achieving the
treble by winning the Swalec Cup, the Premiership Play-Off and
topping the league. He described the club as “unique” and praised
the whole squad by saying that any side they put out this season
could beat any other team in the league . He spoke highly of Chris
Dicomidis saying his leadership was brilliant and boasted about the
club directors saying they were the “backbone of the club.” He
concluded by describing the fans as a key ingredient of Pontypridd
RFC, and something that no other club has.

Special guest, Michael Owen, former player of Pontypridd RFC
also made a short speech and said that he has “immense pride” in
being a part of the history of the club, from playing in Ponty
schools to playing with his Ponty heroes such as the Chief, Neil
Jenkins and Paul John. He said that he felt “privileged to be in
that changing room” and that “Ponty Rugby will never die.”

The Chairman of Pontypridd, Roger Davies also made a speech and
described the season as “brilliant” and “proud.” He made comment on
the final game of the season, the Play-Off Final against Llanelli,
and described it as a “superb effort” by the team. He went on to
describe the forwards as “the best in Wales” and gave thanks to the
team and to Owen Smith in inviting the club to London.

Finally the club delegates were taken on the tour of the Houses
of Parliament where they had the opportunity to walk through the
passageway from Portcullis House, under Big Ben into the main
building. They walked through Westminster Hall, St Stephens Hall,
through to the main building where they saw the House of Lords and
the House of Commons. Finally through the lobby onto the terrace
outside by the Thames for some well earned drinks.

Ten years on

It was ten years ago to the day - 21st May 2003 - that
Pontypridd RFC played its last game as a fully professional
club.

It was ten years ago to the day - 21st May 2003 - that
Pontypridd RFC played its last game as a fully professional
club.

Emotions were running high at Sardis Road on that Wednesday
evening as the team that had been such a force in Welsh rugby over
the previous decade played out its last act on the big stage. The
match result was a 29pts to 24 victory over Llanelli, but few
celebrated as the final whistle sounded.

The match programme for the game was a special edition including
a series of articles reminiscing on the golden era that had passed,
and speculation as to what the future held.

The ensuing ten year period of semi professional rugby has been
well documented, how Pontypridd RFC a year later stood on the brink
of dissolution , how regional rugby came and went with the
disbanding of the Celtic Warriors, how the club battled its way
back from near oblivion to become once again a major force in Welsh
rugby.

There are some vital threads that run through that ten year
period. Selected for Pontypridd on 21st May 2003 were wingers
Matthew Nuthall and Gareth Wyatt, scrum half Paul John and no8 Dale
McIntosh. The four again featured, the former two as players the
latter two as coaches as Pontypridd once more took on Llanelli on
18th May 2013 and secured the Premiership crown and league and cup
double - a high point in the history of the club.

Ten years on and Pontypridd RFC is still here, prouder and
stronger than ever, ready to meet head on whatever new challenges
the future holds.

The despondency of 2003 has been replaced by the euphoria of
2013.

"We get knocked down but we get up again, you ain't
ever going to keep us down..."

The Ponty team powered its way to an emphatic

books by claiming victory over Llanelli in the Premiership Play-Off
Final played on Saturday evening 18th May, thus clinching the
league and cup double.

There were scenes of euphoria at Sardis Road as the squad and
supporters joined forces to celebrate a comprehensive victory over
Llanelli by 47pts to 15 to clinch the league crown.

With the SWALEC Cup already won two weeks previously, Pontypridd
had claimed a historic domestic double and also broke the club
record with an eighteenth consecutive victory in all
competitions.

The highly charged atmosphere at Sardis Road reached a crescendo
as skipper Chris Dicoimidis was presented with the league trophy
amidst the crowd's chanting and a firework display in the
background.

The sense of achievement of the Pontypridd squad and the club as
a whole was summed up by team manager Richard Langmead after the
final whistle.

"This is the culmination of a long season's hard
graft" said Langmead. "We set out to be competitive on
all fronts and now we can put things in perspective - we were the
only team to beat British & Irish Cup winners Leinster A, we
have triumphed in the SWALEC Cup and now we have claimed the league
crown and completed the double.

"The effort of the squad can not be faulted, and once again
we have been spurred on by a phenomenal support that has been the
sixteenth man throughout the season.

"This is a dream come true, now is a time to celebrate and
enjoy the night, then to move forward and prepare for next
season."

Supporters are asked to turn up early for the crunch Premiership
Play-Off Final at Sardis Road on Saturday 18th May.
Indications are that a bumper crowd will be in attendance for the
season’s climax.

The league decider between Pontypridd and Llanelli kicks off at
7pm. This will be an ‘all pay’ match for which season tickets are
not valid.

Admission prices for the Play-Off Final are set at £15
Grandstand (£10 concession for senior citizens and juniors under
16) and £10 Ground (£8 concession) with under 11's allowed in
free when accompanied by an adult.

A large home support is expected to cheer Ponty on, hopefully,
to a historic league and cup double. Llanelli have also indicated
that they will bring a strong contingent of travelling support.

The appeal goes out for all supporters to come down early to
Sardis to avoid unnecessary congestion and delay at the gates.

With a private function booked in the main Clubhouse Bar – an
unavoidable situation for Pontypridd RFC due to a late change in
the Play-Off Final date – there will be limited access to some
areas of the ground and restricted parking.

A specially erected marquee with bar facilities in front of the
main club building will provide alternative facilities for
supporters.

It will be an evening of high drama as the season reaches its
climax for a Pontypridd team chasing the silverware and the glory.
Don’t miss out on this great rugby occasion – come early and come
noisy!

Close encounter of the third kind as Ponty meet Llanelli in league showdown

Pontypridd go into a crunch league decider on
Saturday 18th May as they contest the Premiership Play-Off Final,
the tie played at Sardis Road kicking off at 7pm.

Pontypridd go into a crunch league decider on
Saturday 18th May as they contest the Premiership Play-Off Final,
the tie played at Sardis Road kicking off at 7pm.

The climax to a long and hugely successful
campaign could not be more dramatic as Pontypridd go all out to
defend the Premiership trophy and justify their status as clear
league winners in a one off winner-takes-all showdown.

For the third consecutive seasons the
challengers for the crown will be Llanelli. As far as Play-Off
Finals go, honours are even as Llanelli claimed the trophy in 2011
and Pontypridd in 2012. The two clubs have met three times already
this season with Ponty victorious on each occasion, home and away
in the league and in a SWALEC Cup tie played away at Parc y
Scarlets.

For Pontypridd there is the added incentive of
claiming an elusive domestic double having clinched the Welsh Cup
with victory over Neath at the national stadium two weeks
previously.

The significance of the encounter can scarcely
be overstated as the success of an entire season hangs in the
balance of eighty minutes of high drama, with the form book of the
previous nine months thrown to the wind in what is essentially a
cup final decider.

Continuing with a tried and trusted policy of
squad rotation, Pontypridd make nine changes from the team that
kicked off the successful SWALEC Cup challenge last time out.

Full back Adam Thomas and flanker Rhys
Shellard return from Wales Sevens duties to claim their places, the
latter making his 100th club appearance. Centre Dafydd Lockyer has
overcome a groin twinge suffered in that cup final, but still
sidelined are wing Lewis Williams, hooker Jack Dando and prop Pat
Palmer, all with shoulder injuries, scrum half Gareth James with a
hamstring strain and prop Bradley Thyer with a jarred neck.

The Pontypridd team selected to face Llanelli
is as follows:

15.Adam Thomas. 14.Owen Williams. 13.Gavin
Dacey. 12.Dafydd Lockyer. 11.Matthew Nuthall. 10.Simon Humberstone.
9.Lloyd Williams.

1.Stuart Williams. 2.Huw Dowden. 3.Kieron
Jenkins. 4.Craig Locke. 5.Chris Dicomidis - cpt. 6.Ed Siggery.
7.Rhys Shellard. 8.Dan Godfrey.

Subs: 16.Joel Raikes. 17.Dai
Flanagan. 18.Gareth Wyatt. 19.Darran Harris. 20.Wayne O'Connor.
21.Cory Hill. 22.Chris Phillips. 23.Scott Roberts.

Pontypridd coach Dale McIntosh this week follows the simple
philosophy of the patron saint of Wales in urging his followers to
do the little things well and let the big things take their
course.

Pontypridd coach Dale McIntosh this week follows the simple
philosophy of the patron saint of Wales in urging his followers to
do the little things well and let the big things take their
course.

"Gwnewch y pethau bychain - Do the little things" was
St David's time honoured advice, and as McIntosh prepares his
squad for the massive task of defending the Premiership crown, he
knows that if the Ponty players get the detail right on the night,
the big result will follow.

"Llanelli will pose us a huge threat in challenging for the
league title" said McIntosh "but we have the capacity to
meet and surpass that challenge. We need to concentrate on getting
the little things right during the course of the game, to be tight
in defence, to give ourselves a solid set piece platform, to work
through the phases and carry the ball hard, to put players into
space.

"We can put a strong twenty-three man squad into action on
Saturday night and we are capable of playing expansive rugby to win
the game.

"It will be one hell of a battle as Llanelli themselves are
hitting form and have some dangerous strike players with an
abundance of pace and creativity."

With so much at stake in the championship showdown, McIntosh is
appealing to the Pontypridd support to match the squad in putting
in one last effort to wrap up the season in style.

"It goes without saying that in a one off decider like
this, we need the full support of the Valleys Army behind us to
spur us on. We have had a great following home and away all season,
and their passion for the club has been a big influence on our
results.

"Ask any of the players and they will vouch how precious
that support is to us. On the big occasion like the Play-Off Final
we rely on that support, but also have the opportunity to repay the
fans for their loyalty. We hope that they turn up in their droves
to Sardis Road on Saturday night."
