A valuable away win, by 26pts to 9, against an in form Bridgend team on Friday evening 13th September, provided a big boost to Ponty's Celtic League campaign. With eight points notched up to their credit, Ponty are now lying in fourth position in pool B of the competition, their next engagement being a home tie against the bottom placed team, Scottish Borders, on Friday evening 20th September.

Whilst there is no doubting the importance of the victory at the Brewery Field, coach Lynn Howells is keeping his feet firmly on the ground, with a view that there is much work still to be done before his team can claim to be hitting top form. The main problem that needs addressing, according to Howells, is the ability to perform consistently over the eighty minutes, and to cut out lapses of concentration that inevitably prove costly in terms of points given away. "There are still a lot of things we need to work on and can improve on" said Lynn after the Bridgend game, "We lost too much ball going forward and our driving line out needs some work. At this stage of the season, it was a win, and that is important, but we know we have to work harder".

Nearly a month into the new campaign, Ponty's senior squad has a settled look to it, before the final registration of players for domestic and European competitions. With scrum half Phil Edwards now having been released, the current make up of the squad is as follows…

Full Backs: Brett Davey; Emyr Lewis.

Wingers: Gareth Wyatt; Matthew Nuttall; Richard Johnston (on dual registration with Llanharan).

Centres: Sonny Parker; Shaun James; Jon Bryant; Jason Lewis (dually registered with Newbridge).

Outside halves: Ceri Sweeney; Neil Jenkins.

Scrum halves: Paul John; Gareth Baber.

Props: Gethin Jenkins; Neil Hennessy; Duncan Bell; David Jones (currently on permit to Ebbw Vale). Sven Cronk (on dual registration with Pontypool) Hookers: Mefin Davies (cpt); Matthew Rees.

Back row: Nick Kelly; Michael Owen; Geraint Lewis; Kingsley Jones; Richard Parks; Wayne O'Connor (on dual registration with Rumney).

The Pontypridd under 21 team played a home league game against Caerphilly on Saturday 14th September, and emerged as comfortable winners by 50pts to 15. This was a good open encounter, with plenty of opportunities created and taken. Try scorers for Ponty were full back Darryl Lynch, wingers Daniel Hitchings and Richard Fussell, the latter with two tries, debutant flanker Craig Morris, also with two touchdowns, and centre Jon Rimmer. Four of the tries were converted by outside half Michael Thomas and one by substitute centre Lee Thomas. > News > Club News > Room for Improvement.
