It was “job done” for Pontypridd at Sardis Road as they secured a valuable home bonus point win over Llandovery to maintain their status as Welsh Premiership leaders.
The visitors started brightly and were rewarded with a penalty kicked by full back Mike Sauro to open the scoring. As Ponty struck back through a Dean Gunter penalty, a competitive encounter seemed in store. It was outside half Gunter who then created the next score for Ponty, launching a well measured reverse cross kick for scrum half Garyn Lucas to pounce for the touchdown, converted by Gunter.
Although territory and possession was for long periods evenly contested, Pontypridd had by far the more clinical edge, another Gunter cross kick fielded by full back Gareth Wyatt who sent centre Gavin Dacey over for a try which Gunter again converted. When the home backs once more swept upfield, playing through many phases to send winger Matthew Nuthall in for a try in the corner, they looked well worth their interval lead of 22pts to 3.
The second half followed the pattern of the first, Llandovery enjoying periods of pressure, but their enthusiasm not matched by their efficiency, and Pontypridd hitting back with a score, an opportunist chip and chase and good support work rounded off with a close range try for prop Chris Phillips, converted by Gunter.
With a bonus point in the bag, Ponty at times were guilty of sitting back and soaking up their opponents’ forays, but doing so with commendable effort. Another sweeping cross field attack by the home side was finished off with a touchdown wide out by wing Matthew Nuthall. Ponty were able to step up an extra gear at will, generating a fine support move which ended in a try for replacement centre Gary Williams, converted from a wide angle by Gunter.
The afternoon’s work was done as the game petered out to a low key finale, but Pontypridd having all the points available safely in the bag, courtesy of their 41pts to 3 victory.
