Pontypridd Youth kicked off their pre-season preparations on Saturday 18th August with an emphatic away win at Llandovery.
The game was played at the Church Bank grounds on a pitch adjacent to the corresponding senior fixture between the two clubs.
Ponty Youth travelled to Llandovery with a somewhat depleted squad due to injuries and regional commitments. A number of new signings were making their club debuts, and a number of players stepping up out of last season’s under 16s squad.
Pontypridd worked hard to dominate possession and territory during the first period, but unable to pull away as Llandovery doggedly held out and kept in touch through their kicks at goal.
Ponty carried a slender 12pts to 15 advantage into the interval but then fell behind early in the second half as the hosts scored and opportunist interception try.
As the game progressed Ponty were gelling together effectively and able to dominate proceedings into the final quarter. A try count of seven to three in Ponty’s favour reflected that dominance as did a final score-line of 25pts to 41.
Ponty Youth assistant coach Andy Price was pleased with his team’s overall performance.
“As a first warm up game of the new season this was a very useful exercise and we are pleased with the performance” said Price.
“We looked a little disjointed at times and took some time to gel together, but the newcomers to the squad showed up well and we were able to move up a gear or two as the game progressed to claim a good away win.”
Try scorers for Pontypridd were: Josh Edwards (3); Jordan Eynon; Dale Hughes; Adam Harcombe; Steffan Jenkins. Three conversions were kicked by outside half James Nicholas.
