Hailing from the village of Cwmbach in the upper reaches of the Cynon Valley, Dafydd Richard Lockyer played his early rugby for nearby Abercwmboi, at junior and youth level, before graduating to play for the club's senior team.
Whilst representing Abercwmboi in division four of the Welsh leagues, Dafydd also enlisted with the Pontypridd Academy in 2001, his physical presence as a line breaking centre or winger earning him representative honours with Wales Youth and Welsh Schools.
Dafydd was drafted into the Pontypridd senior squad for the 2003/2004 season, making his mark with a tally of eight tries to his name, playing mostly on the wing.
His huge potential was also recognised at regional level, with a call-up to the Warriors Academy and selected for their tour of South Africa in the summer of 2004. Following a highly successful season with Pontypridd in the premiership, making the inside centre berth his own, Dafydd was rewarded with a call up to the Wales under 21 World Cup squad which toured Argentina in the summer of 2005.
By now a key member of the Pontypridd team, further representative honours came Dafydd's way with a call up to the Blues Development squad, and playing for Wales under 21s during the 2006 World Cup tournament in France.
In the summer of 2007, Dafydd left Pontypridd having taken up the offer of a move to Neath. His stay at the Gnoll having been marred by a series of injuries, Dafydd re-signed for Pontypridd in the summer of 2009, to the delight of Pontypridd's legions of supporters.
