Bedwas opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a penalty from full back Stuart Thomas, but it wasn’t long until pressure applied by league leaders Pontypridd resulted in a score. It came from Simon Humberstone, putting over his first penalty after ten minutes.
Ponty took the lead when Bedwas were caught offside and Humberstone put over his second penalty, that lead extended when wing Owen Williams galloped down the touchline to score in the corner, the try expertly converted from the left hand touchline by Humberstone, who in doing so passed 100 points for the season.
Indiscipline cost Pontypridd during the remainder of the first half as Kristian Baller and Simon Humberstone both received yellow cards from referee Huw David. This gave the home side momentum leading up to half time with Pontypridd repelling repeated attacks on their own try line. However their lead was trimmed going into the break following two penalties from Stuart Thomas .
Ponty’s lead was further cut to a single point five minutes into the second half when Thomas put over his fourth penalty. Replacement outside half Dean Gunter had the chance to extend Pontypridd’s lead five minutes later, but his kick rebounding off the upright.
The home team forged ahead after fifty four minutes with Thomas’ fifth penalty. The lead lasted nine minutes when Gunter put over his first successful penalty from wide left, but a sixth penalty from Thomas then restoring Bedwas’ advantage. Pontypridd stepped up the pace and following an initial break by Adam Thomas, the ball was moved to replacement Lewis Jones who scampered over near the posts for his side’s second try. Gunter put over the resulting conversion.
Ponty kept up the pressure and the win was sealed just before full time with a try scored by Owen Williams, the wing diving over in the corner for his second of the game. Gunter magnificently put over the conversion from the wide left hand touchline.
The game ended in a frantic passage of play with both sides going on the attack, Bedwas striving to score a try to secure a losing bonus point and Pontypridd aiming for a fourth try and the bonus point win. However it was not to be, but Pontypridd becoming only the second side this season to come away from the Bridge Field with a win and the club’s eighth on the trot, emerging as victors by 18pts to 30.
