Pontypridd v Newport – Matchday Preview

This Thursday 29th February Pontypridd RFC make a welcome return to action for the first time in just under a month. Newport are the visitors to Sardis Road in the Indigo Group Welsh Premiership, the match kicks off at 7:30pm and it will be broadcast live on S4C Clic.

There’s a touch of déjà vu about this week’s match as Newport’s last visit to Sardis Road, on the 30th March 2023, was also on a Thursday evening and broadcast live on S4C Clic. Despite a strong start to that contest which saw Rory Harries score after just four minutes, it was the Black & Ambers that ran out winners by 34 points to 7.

Ponty’s last win over Newport at Sardis Road came in the first competitive match after the ‘Covid-restart’ when a Dale Stuckey try helped seal a 19-16 win.

The two clubs met earlier in the season on Wednesday 1st November 2023 at Newport Stadium and it was an evening to forget for Ponty with Newport running out winners by 54 points to 3.

Joe Miles, just after having a try disallowed for a line-out infringement, when Ponty played Newport at Sardis Road last March.

February has been a relatively quiet period for the Welsh Premiership, but there have been some matches over the last few weeks and results has seen Pontypridd slip down to 7th place in the standings – four places below this week’s visitors.

A large, vocal home crowd will be vital as Pontypridd look to topple high-flying Newport this Thursday – get behind the boys and make some noise!
