Player Microscope – Sam Evans

Sam Evans: Number 8

Sam was nearly 13 years old when he started playing rugby, for his Comprehensive School. Showing a talent for the sport, he joined his local club Abercwmboi RFC and played his rugby there for the next five years.

During his time with his local club, representative honours came when he played for the Cynon Valley District side for two years. Some eye-catching performances resulted in Sam being called up to play for both the Cardiff Blues U16’s and their combined squad. He was then picked to play for the Blues U18’s a year early as well as playing for Coleg Y Cymoedd where he was studying.

It was during Sam’s time in the college that he got the opportunity to firstly train with Pontypridd RFC before signing for the club.

Sam said: “I am grateful to be able to train and play for Ponty as I continue to develop my rugby career. I believe many great opportunities will come playing for Ponty in the future.”

Sam made his debut for Ponty in round two of the Indigo Premiership Cup away at Ebbw Vale. A hugely promising debut was curtailed by an injury and he only returned to fitness to play last Saturday, ironically at home against the same opponents – he’s made two powerful appearances so far for Ponty, here’s to many more.
