Matchday Preview – RGC v Pontypridd

Pontypridd RFC are on the road again this week heading north to Colwyn Bay to play RGC. The Indigo Group Premiership match at Parc Eirias on Saturday 11th March kicks-off at the earlier than usual time of 12:30pm.

This match was originally due to take place earlier in the season on Saturday 17th December 2022 but was postponed due to the freezing weather conditions that swept across the country in the build-up to, and over that particular weekend.

Last season the club’s met three times in the two domestic competitions which included a ‘double’ for Ponty in the Welsh Premiership Cup. Firstly, on the 16th October 2021 Pontypridd won a thriller by 40 points to 38 at Sardis Road – Dale Stuckey, Ceri Morris (2), Joe Miles, Lloyd Rowlands and Joe Davies with our tries.

Then due to two postponements the Valley Commandos had to wait until January 2022 to play the away match in the pool. There was much hype for what was a ‘winner takes all’ tie and Ponty came away with a famous 30-25 win in Colwyn Bay to leapfrog the Gogs and qualify for the knock-out stages of the Cup at their expense.

RGC did gain revenge for that defeat in April 2022 when they triumphed 40 points to 10 in the Welsh Premiership at Parc Eirias.

A victorious Ponty squad, after the 30-25 win at Parc Eirias which secured qualification to the quarter-finals of the Welsh Premiership Cup in January 2022.

Pontypridd head into this week’s match having had last weekend off following Llanelli’s request to postpone the Welsh Premiership match between the two clubs at Parc y Scarlets. RGC did have a match last Saturday, they lost by 40 points to 25 away against Bridgend at the Brewery Field.

There’s no official club travel for this match, but the team still needs as many of the Ponty faithful there on the day to help get behind them in what is one of the toughest away grounds to visit in the league.

The address for the stadium is – Parc Eirias, Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, Conwy, LL29 7SP.

Safe travels Ponty Fans, we’ll see you all up north this coming Saturday! Ole!
