Matchday Preview – Pontypridd v Newport

This Saturday 25th March Pontypridd head to Bridgend to play Newport in a massive Welsh Cup semi-final tie. The match at the Dunraven Brewery Field kicks-off at 2:30pm.

Pontypridd’s route to the semi-final was via winning Group B in the revamped competition this season. Following a 30 points to 26 loss at home against Bridgend, but crucially earning two bonus points from the match, the team then put in a superb stoic performance to win away at Aberavon in early December last year by 24 points to 5 to seal top spot in the Group and progression.

Our opponents Newport comfortably finished top of Group C following an impressive 45-17 win away at Swansea, backed up by a 32-15 win at home against Llanelli in their two Group matches back in 2022.

The last time Pontypridd and Newport played each other in the knock-out stages of the Welsh Cup was just over six years ago on Saturday 18th February 2017, in the second round of the competition – Ponty won by 34 points to 29 that afternoon at Sardis Road. Tries from Wayne Evans, Huw Dowden, Hemi Barnes, Lewis I Williams (2) along with 6 points and 3 points from the boots of Ceri Sweeney and Lewis K Williams respectively sealed a close-fought victory and passage through to the next round.

This Saturday will require a huge combined effort from both the Team and Supporters if the Valley Commandos a to seal a spot in the Showpiece Final come May, so lets do this – WE ARE PONTY!
