Matchday Preview – Pontypridd v Carmarthen Quins

Next up it’s a five day turnaround between matches for Pontypridd RFC as we welcome Carmarthen Quins to Sardis Road this Thursday 23rd November. The Indigo Group Premiership match between the two clubs kicks off at 7:30pm and will be broadcast live on S4C Clic.

When Ponty and the Quins lock horns it’s traditionally the home side that comes out on top, but last season’s matches went against the norm. The two sides first met in last season’s campaign at Carmarthen Park on Thursday evening 13th October 2022, again in front of the S4C cameras. Ponty edged a closely-fought contest by 21 points to 15, Dale Stuckey and Jordan Howells got the tries and Joseph Scrivens kicked 11 points to secure the win for the Valley Commandos.

Then earlier this year on Saturday 18th February a Garyn Daniel try was added to an earlier Joel Raikes touchdown to give Ponty a 17-10 lead as the match headed into the final quarter at Sardis Road. A league-double over the Quins looked on the cards for Ponty before a Corum Nott try and a last-gasp Jac Wilson penalty saw the men from Carmarthen Park triumph 20-17 at the death.

Garyn Daniel was the man with the ball at the bottom of the pile – his 62nd minute try gave Ponty the lead when the two clubs met back in February.

Back-to-back league wins over Swansea and Aberavon sees Pontypridd sit in 8th place in the Premiership, but due to the congested nature of the table a win could potentially propel the team up to 5th – just one place outside of the all-important top 4 play-off places.

Carmarthen sit in 12th place on the league ladder having suffered some close defeats so far this season – none more so than last Saturday when ex-Ponty fullback Ben Jones’ 83rd minute try broke Quins’ hearts at Carmarthen Park as they lost to Merthyr by 22 points to 18.

Clashes between Ponty and the Quins are normally close-fought affairs with only a score in it either way come the final whistle, so make sure you turn up in numbers on Thursday Ponty Fans to try and help roar the team on to victory.
