Llandovery v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview

Next up for Pontypridd RFC is a trip to north-west Carmarthenshire to play reigning league champions Llandovery RFC. The Indigo Group Premiership match at Church Bank kicks off at 2:30pm.

The two sides met earlier in the season on Saturday 16th September at Sardis Road. A late rally from Ponty which included tries from McCauley Rowley and Ryan Wilkins wasn’t enough and The Drovers took the spoils by 24 points to 12.

Ponty’s last visit to Church Bank came on Saturday 11th February 2023. It was an attritional battle between the two clubs which ended up being a case of another one that got away from Pontypridd last season. The Valley Commandos put in valiant performance only to suffer a late 20 points to 19 loss. A second half try from Niko Matawalu and some expert place-kicking from Jamie Murphy wasn’t quite enough when Jack Maynard’s late penalty effort saw The Drovers home by the barest of margins.

Ponty’s Aled Ward tackling Llandovery captain Lee Rees during a physical battle earlier in the year at Church Bank.

Pontypridd will be licking their wounds following a late 26-25 reverse at home to Ebbw Vale last Saturday whereas current table-toppers Llandovery won a closely fought battle against Merthyr at The Wern by 20 points to 10. As always the loyal support from the travelling Valley Commandos will be key this Saturday.
