Josh Phillips signs on the dotted line for Pontypridd

Pontypridd RFC are delighted to announce the signing of Wales U20’s outside half Josh Phillips from the Scarlets.

The 21 year old from the Rhondda played for Pontypridd Juniors and won the Dewar Shield with Rhondda Schools when he was younger. Josh then represented Cardiff Blues U16’s and went unbeaten whilst playing for that particular age grade side. He then progressed to the Blues U18’s and was called up to play for Wales U18’s just prior to the Covid-pandemic putting a stop to all rugby-related activity.

A player of undoubted talent, the Scarlets snapped him up on a long-term contract when he was 17 years old and whilst with the West Wales region Josh played for the Scarlets ‘A’ team and represented Wales U20’s in the Six Nations and 2022 Summer Series. He made his debut for the Scarlets’ senior side in a pre-season friendly against Bristol Bears, all whilst cutting his teeth in the Welsh Premiership for Llanelli RFC over the last two seasons – winning the accolade of being the club’s top points scorer in the campaign that’s just finished.

Looking forward to getting started with Pontypridd, Josh commented: “I’m very excited to get stuck in with Ponty again, a club I spent four years with in Junior rugby. I’m looking forward to a challenging and hopefully a successful season in black and white.”

On Josh signing for Pontypridd RFC, Joint Head Coach Lee Davies said: “Josh has always been a player I have admired from afar. I tried my best to get him to Coleg y Cymoedd but he decided to continue his rugby development at Glantaf, a journey that saw him venture west and join the Scarlets academy. This versatility and drive to tread a different path has seen Josh have some excellent exposure at age grade and senior rugby.

Josh has developed greatly over the past few seasons and has become an exceptional kicker, this paired with his vision and athletic capability we certainly have a good prospect – one I am extremely glad to have on our side!

Good luck to Josh and welcome aboard.”

Here’s to getting started at Pontypridd RFC, Josh!
