Carmarthen Quins v Pontypridd – Matchday Preview

This Saturday 30th March Pontypridd travel to play Carmarthen Quins at Carmarthen Park, the Indigo Group Premiership match kicks off at 2:30pm.

When the two clubs met earlier this season it was Ponty that triumphed at Sardis Road in front of the S4C cameras. The match finished two tries apiece, Curtis Greenslade and Liam Lloyd getting touchdowns for the Valley Commandos, but ultimately it was nineteen points from the boot of Josh Phillips that made the difference back on Thursday 23rd November 2023 with Ponty running out winners by 29 points to 20.

Pontypridd’s last visit to Carmarthen Park was again in front of the S4C cameras on Thursday 13th October 2022. It was a match that went down to the wire, Ponty held up a Quins rolling maul just before the try-line and sealed a 21-15 win in the process. Dale Stuckey and Jordan Howells scored Ponty’s tries whilst Joseph Scrivens added the other eleven points with the boot.

Last Saturday Pontypridd extended their winning run to three matches following a bonus-point 30-16 win over Aberavon and remain in 5th place in the table – the second half of the match proving to be thrilling 40 minute performance from Ponty at Sardis Road.

The Quins currently occupy 12th place in the table but have five matches left in the season compared to Ponty’s two. They will also feel they’ve been extremely unlucky of late, last Saturday they were seconds away from a superb win against Merthyr at The Wern before Josh Lewis’ 80th minute try drew the scores level, and his conversion broke Quins hearts as the Ironmen sealed a slender 36-34 win. Saturday’s hosts have lost four of their last five matches but all four defeats have been by 6 points or less, such is the competitive nature of the Premiership this season.

The table, courtesy of Flashscore, is accurate as of the 25/3/2024.

It may be a cliche, but Pontypridd will once again be treating this match as a cup final knowing that only two wins in their last two games will give them any hope of finishing ahead of Cardiff in fourth position in the league.

The support of the Pontypridd faithful has been superb of late, so make sure you pack The Park this Saturday Ponty Fans!
