10.3.2015 Ponty power their way to the Youth Cup Final Youth Cup semi final action

Pontypridd Youth reached the Welsh National Cup Final with a hard fought 13pts to 5 victory over Aberavon Quins in the semi final round played at Pontyclun on Saturday 7th March.

With previous round victories over Cwmbran, Llanishen, St Peters and Nantyffyllon, the semi final was a huge test against an unbeaten Aberavon Quins who currently lead the Ospreys A league.

Pontypridd put the Quins under early pressure with an aggressive defence forcing the opposition to concede numerous penalties one of which enabled outside half Zac Byard to open the scoring. With the majority of the game played in Quins' territory the Pontypridd forwards were dominating possession and mid way through the first half the breakthrough came. Swift hands along the back line looked to put Joe Davies in enough space to touch down, but with the cover defence rushing across a step inside allowed full back Cody Baker to loop around the winger and dive over in the corner.

Further Ponty pressure kept the Quins confined to their half and unable to threaten a score other than a long range kick at goal which failed to hit the target, keeping the half time score 8-0 to Pontypridd.

In the second half with the wind behind them Pontypridd were in full confidence. However the Quins half time talk had fired them into action as they started with momentum and looked to put pressure on the Ponty pack. An outstanding defence managed to keep the Quins at bay, with Pontypridd starting to use their replacements to bolster their ranks. It was again mid way through the half when a loose Quins kick was gathered and slick handling put wing Joe Davies in enough space to chip over the last defender and win the race for the touchdown, the try going unconverted.

The Quins refused to accept defeat, again putting the Ponty defence under continual pressure and with two minutes remaining on the clock finally crossed in the corner, to bring the score 13-5. With the officials playing an additional four minutes, nerves were on a knife edge until the last play was signalled and a penalty awarded to Ponty allowing the ball to be kicked dead. It was then that the celebrations of a trip to the Millennium Stadium begun.

This was a great achievement for Pontypridd Youth and a National Cup final now awaits against Penallta.  A big vote of thanks is due to Pontyclun RFC who hosted the semi final tie and made both teams and their supporters welcome.
