16.11.2014 Ponty Youth achieve a season's double over Llanishen

Pontypridd Youth secured second win of the season over Llanishen Youth on Friday 14th November, by a margin of 50pts to 0.

The two teams had met back in October in the National Youth Cup, with Ponty then securing a home win by 22pts to 0. On this occasion a friendly fixture was played at the Cilfynydd RFC ground.

Ponty took some time to settle in to their game and were often over eager in defence, conceding too many penalties for offside.  However it was not long before they found their rhythm with some swift handling across the back line to send  Brandon Evans racing down the touch line before an inside pass put the supporting Max Hendy over for a try. The second touchdown soon followed with the Ponty forwards sucking in their opponents' defence before Mike Williams found himself on the end of the overlap to score in the corner. Zac Byard converted from wide to increase the lead to 12pts to 0

Ponty always looked dangerous but were not able to turn pressure into points until a flat pass from Byard sent centre Adam Ashford slicing through the defence, racing deep into the opposition half before putting Cody Baker over for a try which Byard converted from in front of the posts, extending the home team's interval lead to 19pts to 0.

The second half started in much the same fashion, Ponty pressure on a five metre scrum enabling Matt Logan to charge down an attempted clearance kick from behind the opposition try line and Jay Lewis on hand to pounce on the lose ball to score, the try again converted by Byard. Further pressure from the home pack earned a penalty which was quickly taken, followed by a drive to the opposition line, the ball recycled allowing Greg Mogford to pick up and dive through for a try which Byard converted from in front of the posts.

With the game broken up, some neat interplay by Pontypridd sent Dewi Morris crashing over for another try. Ponty were now dominating territory and possession, and after maintaining the ball for multiple phases Brandon Evans raced clear and found Chris John up in support to cross for his first try of the season, which was again converted by Byard. The final play of the game culminated with flanker Brendan Payne in space out wide to cross for a try which extended the final scoreline to 50pts to 0 in Ponty's favour. more
