Squad update

Despite an early finish to the current Premiership season, and the possibility of a longer lay-off due to the Covid-19 lockdown, the task of putting in place a squad for the future is underway at Pontypridd RFC.

Player retention is a key factor, and two influential performers who have already committed to next winter’s campaign are scrum half Joel Raikes and full back Lloyd Rowlands.

Raikes has been a model of consistency in the Ponty squad and has reached a tally of 145 appearances in his seven year stint with the club, still at only 25 years of age.

Lloyd Rowlands overcame a long lay-off due to concussion problems, making a comeback into the Ponty ranks last season and will again seek to impress as a dynamic back-line attacker.

Reflecting on his intention to remain at Pontypridd, Raikes said: “I’ve been a Ponty player from junior level and remember going to watch games as a kid. The club means a lot to me and it will be a real privilege to continue playing here next season.

“Its difficult to focus that far ahead in the current situation, but as players we will be looking forward to getting back in harness and for the new season to start.”

Three players who are in the meantime departing Sardis Road this summer are outside half Ben Jones, lock Sean Moore and scrum half Carl Blacker.

Jones joined up with Ponty from the Blues Academy and has made 37 appearances, scoring 169 points. Mountain Ash product Sean Moore, like Jones a former Wales under 20 international, has tallied 79 senior appearances. Carl Blacker was drafted into the Ponty squad last season but did not make a competitive appearance. All three now move on with the thanks and best wishes of all at Pontypridd.
