As a player, local boy Paul Matthews came up through the ranks of Pontypridd Youth before commencing studies at, and playing for UWIC (Cardiff Met). A move to Ebbw Vale followed in the year 2000 as Paul established himself as a top class centre also able to cover at outside half.
As the game in Wales was restructured in 2003 Paul Matthews made a return to Pontypridd at semi professional level, going on to captain the club the following season.
After a stint with Merthyr Paul hung up his boots to take up coaching duties with Mountain Ash.
In 2018 the departure of Backs Coach Gareth Wyatt from Sardis Road opened the door for Paul Matthews, who is employed as a teacher, to make another comeback to his club of origin, this time in a coaching capacity.
