Matthew McCarthy joined Pontypridd from Orrell during the 1997/98 season, and made his debut in the second half of that campaign when he bagged a try against Tucuman in the Challenge Trophy. Prior to playing for Orrell in the English Premiership Matthew represented Neath and Llanelli.
Matthew represented Wales at U21s, ‘A’ and 7s levels and gained a Cambridge Blue when representing the University in the 1994 Varsity match. Whilst with Ponty he played for the Barbarians with Steele Lewis, Paul John and Martyn Williams.
Matthew departed Sardis Road at the conclusion of the 1997/98 season having made 8 appearances and scoring 45 points.
