A group of over forty players turned up at Sardis Road on Tuesday evening 30th June, signalling the commencement of pre-season training in preparation for the 2009 – 2010 campaign.
The squad which assembled was a mix of familiar, battle hardened faces, and a clutch of nervous-looking youngsters – all sharing the same enthusiasm once the muscles were loosened and training commenced.
The players were eased into their first official workout of the summer as new conditioning coach Darren Bool conducted a number of warm-up exercises, and coaches Paul John and Dale McIntosh then taking backs and forwards in sessions of touch rugby and ball skills.
Senior coach Paul John, overseeing the event, explained the format of the evening. “It’s a pretty relaxed atmosphere here tonight” said John. “Our first task is to conduct an assessment of the new players who have turned up on trial, linked with the basic fitness work of a first training session”.
All went well in the warm glow of a summer’s evening at Sardis Road, signalling the first steps of another long-haul season for Pontypridd RFC.
