The semi final round of the SWALEC Cup, played on Saturday 14th April, threw up two nail biting encounters between Premiership and Division One opponents. It was the Premiership teams, Cross Keys and Pontypridd who progressed, but only just.
Cross Keys drew their game 19pts all with Ebbw Vale, and were trailing with just three minutes remaining. A Dean Gunter penalty brought them level, and securing passage to the final round having scored two tries to Ebbw’s one.
Gareth David and Tom Lampard scored the Keys’ tries and Ashley Sweet scored for Ebbw Vale.
Pontypridd endured a torrid second half against a spirited Newbridge team, whose attacks were orchestrated by former Ponty outside half Neil Burnett. Having led at the interval by 18pts to 8 Ponty hung on grimly for victory by 28pts to 24.
Cross Keys and Pontypridd will meet in the SWALEC Cup Final on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May.
