Pontypridd began the game on the front foot, working off a solid set piece platform and making advances into home territory.

As the contest settled into something of a stalemate, Llandovery came back into the reckoning, attempting to up the tempo with a quick tap penalty. Handling errors committed by both sides were stemming any possible momentum, with both defences well marshalled and able to keep play well away from the respective try lines.

Ponty made headway upfield with a series of forceful drives but unable to forge a breakthrough. The game was by now morphing into a typical hard fought cup tie, a dogfight for possession, with frustrations threatening to break out into the odd spate of fighting. The interval came with no impression made on the scoreboard.

Pontypridd again got the second period off to a positive start, clearly attempting to move up a gear and dominating territorially, but lacking the killer instinct. A Llandovery kick and chase counter took play back into the visitors’ twenty-two, where they camped out for some time but repelled by the strong scrummaging and aggressive tackling of the Valley Commandos.

The game was moving into its final quarter still evenly balanced and with tensions rising. A dynamic break by Ponty outside half Simon Humberstone put his team in a good position to attack, pressure being maintained and a penalty awarded which Humberstone stroked over to finally break the deadlock with seventy-five minutes gone.

Llandovery tried hard to strike back but found themselves up against a solid Ponty defence, who made every first up tackle count. Progressing into a period of injury time Pontypridd kept their composure to protect what was to be a match winning margin of 0pts to 3.
