Premiership Cup fixtures announced

After an 18 month hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, competitive rugby at semi-pro level in Wales will finally make a welcome return on 18th September.

The new season will kick-off for the Indigo Group Premiership clubs with a Cup tournament split into two pools of six – east and west – with the winner and runner-up of each pool meeting in a semi-final tie, the winners going on to contest the grand final.

Pontypridd are placed in the eastern pool, up against Cardiff, Ebbw Vale, Merthyr, Newport and RGC.

The first competitive game of the season for Ponty will be a home tie against Newport on Saturday 18th September, followed by an away trip to Ebbw Vale. On the first weekend of October, Ponty will host Merthyr in a mouth-watering valleys derby.

Pontypridd Team Manager Dan Godfrey expressed his delight at the announcement of the new competition and fixtures.

“Everyone involved with the squad are excited at the prospect of playing rugby again” said Dan. “The fixture list gives us something definite to aim towards. The players have worked hard on their conditioning during the enforced break and the coaching team have been planning carefully behind the scenes. Now we have a target date in sight and there is a buzz about the place.

“There are no easy games in the east pool of the cup tournament and we kick off at home against Newport which is always a tough fixture. We are all looking forward, players and coaches alike, to get back out in front of our home crowd and to engage with the fans once more.”
