Pontypridd were made to work hard for their 34pts to 7 home win over neighbouring club Ystrad Rhondda in their first warm up game prior to the new season.

Ponty enjoyed a greater share of possession and showed plenty of attacking endeavour, but were always up against a fully competitive Ystrad team.

It took ten minutes for Ponty to break the deadlock, outside half Lewis K Williams rounding off a phase of support play with a try wide out. After debutant centre Geraint Walsh set off on a weaving run through the opposition defence, prop Darran Harris was on hand to cross for another score.

Ystrad were rewarded for their efforts, putting together some effective passages of play for wing Alex Webber to claim a touchdown which was converted by fly half Dan John. It was Ponty however who extended their lead  following a series of drives, as second row Craig Locke charged over for a try to register an interval scoreline of 15pts to 7.

A raft of changes were made at half time, and the weather conditions also deteriorating to stem the flow of the game. Handling errors were prominent in a constant downpour, with evidence also of a lack of cohesion after the summer break.

Emerging from a scrappy period of play, Ponty finally gelled with scrum half Gareth James a catalyst for their attacks and Craig Locke crossing for a second try, this time converted by Dai Flanagan.

Replacement winger Owen Jenkins then made his mark with two late touchdowns, the one converted by Flanagan to ultimately give Pontypridd a winning margin of 34pts to 7.

A game which was played throughout with passive scrums, and was sometimes frenetic and sometimes lethargic, had nevertheless given an indication of greater things to come as the season progresses.
