Pontypridd made a high tempo start to the game, winger Matthew Nuthall rounding off the first attack of the afternoon by squeezing in for a try in the corner which outside half Simon Humberstone expertly converted.
The home team continued to display fine support and handling skills, another fluent passing move culminating in a try for scrum half Lewis Jones again converted by Humberstone. As Ponty maximised their attacking options they then became victims of their own endeavours as a floated midfield pass was intercepted by Tonmawr winger Steffan Andrews who raced clear for a try which Luke Richards converted.
An afternoon of high excitement was in store, but the game having flattered to deceive as it then disintegrated into a catalogue of errors dominated by the referee’s whistle, often signalling some bizarre decisions.
For a long period each side of the interval, the game lost its own plot. Pontypridd remained the dominant force, enjoying a far greater share of possession, but too often undone by their own errors and indecisions, failing to replicate their early fluency. Tonmawr in turn were under intense pressure, and having lock Hywel Davies and flanker James McKenna sin binned for infringing.
It was not until the sixty-second minute that Ponty finally made the breakthrough, taking a quick tap and go free kick to send winger Owen Williams over for a try wide out, Humberstone’s conversion rebounding off a post. The home team now found a couple of extra gears and finished off the game in emphatic fashion.
Owen Williams rounded off a series of drives with his second touchdown, which Humberstone again converted from a wide angle. The outside half then made a neat break before supplying a scoring pass to flanker Calum Thomas with a conversion to follow, and centre Gary Williams finishing off the afternoon’s work by bursting through for a sixth and final try.
Hard work it had been at times, but the end result of a 38pts to 7 bonus point win being all that Pontypridd could have asked for.
