The game got off to a frenetic start, with Ponty missing an early scoring opportunity as fly-half Gunter pulled wide a kickable penalty. It was Llandovery who drew first blood, rounding off a concerted period of pressure as dynamic centre Joe Ajuwa charged over from close range.

Ponty responded with some phases of power play, hooker Kris Dacey leading a foray upfield with winger Chris Clayton up in support to cross for a try which Gunter converted. Both teams were willing to attack from all angles as the game took on the guise of a free flowing end-of-season contest. Ponty were putting a lot of energy into their performance, and Llandovery always a threat on the counter, their scrum half Gareth James going close in the corner, but no addition to the interval scoreline of 7pts to 5 in the home team’s favour.

Ponty struck early as the second half commenced, launching an attack down the blind side for wing Chris Clayton to squeeze in for a try in the corner. The home side were now capitalising on their opponents’ numerous errors, full back Nuthall almost in for another score wide out, before Dean Gunter underpinned his side’s superiority by slotting over three coolly struck penalties in succession.

As the Drovers regained focus to mount a sustained period of pressure, Ponty were aggressive in defence to hold their line, but eventually succumbing as Llandovery full back Howard Thomas cut through for a try which he also converted. The visitors were finishing the stronger, utilising their pace and power amongst the backs, but Ponty holding firm to maintain a winning margin of 21pts to 12.
