Pontypridd enjoyed the freedom of Sardis Road as they ran in thirteen tries whilst notching up a comprehensive 81pts to 5 victory over Division One opponents Mountain Ash.
The deadlock was broken in the sixth minute as Ponty’s centre partnership combined to produce a score, Gary Williams initially bursting through and Harley Thomson in support to claim a try. Another touchdown followed as dynamic hooker Darran Harris galloped over for a try which Thomson converted. Mountain Ash almost struck back with an interception but Ponty then resuming their dominance, no8 Owen Sheppeard and then flanker Chris Dicomidis rounding off sweeping attacking moves, and both tries converted by Thomson to give the home team a healthy interval advantage of 33pts to 0.
It was impressive hooker Harris who resumed the scoring for Ponty after the break, powering through on a diagonal run to touch down. The home team were piling on the pressure, their efforts rewarded as flanker Calum Thomas went over for a close range try.
Following a series of forward drives Ponty shipped the ball out for centre Thomson to cross again, then converting his own score.
Going into the final quarter and already past the half century of points, Ponty were expressing themselves at will, showing fine support and handling skills. Tries followed in quick succession for flanker Thomas, wing Chris Clayton and Calum Thomas again, two of those converted by Thomson.
Harley Thomson then rounded off a lively individual performance, and another sweeping passing move to score a try which he also converted.
To their credit a competitive Mountain Ash team put together a concerted phase of pressure, replacement prop Guy Ali driving over for a consolation try. The last word rightly belonged to Pontypridd, outside half Gareth Wyatt instigating a final foray which gathered momentum through a Gavin Dacey break, and Wyatt on hand to round off with another try which Thomson converted.
An entertaining encounter at Sardis Road came to an end with Ponty claiming the victory by 81pts to 5.
