It was a classic game of two halves for Pontypridd as they took on the might of the Cardiff Blues at Sardis Road, putting in a valiant first half performance to hold their regional rivals 6pts apiece, but eventually succumbing to defeat by 6pts to 37.

The contest was competitive from the start, with opposing outside halves, Gareth Davies for the Blues and Dean Gunter for Ponty, exchanging early penalty kicks.

Ponty soaked up a significant amount of pressure but looked a real threat on the counter, with lively winger Lewis Williams ready to break from deep. On a number of occasions Ponty advanced to their opponents’ line but were unable to cross the whitewash.

Another Gareth Davies penalty edged the Blues into the lead, but Gunter once more responding in kind, and unlucky to see a third attempt at goal rebound off the post. The interval came with the two teams level on 6pts apiece.

The Blues made numerous changes in personnel and drew first blood after the restart as full back Chris Czekaj crossed for a try on the overlap which was converted by Ceri Sweeney. Ponty were now grafting hard in defence but unable to prevent another score as winger Richard Mustoe touched down right on the corner flag.

There was by now wave after wave of Blues attacks coming Ponty’s way, lock Macauley Cook barging over for a close range try and centre Cory Allan slicing through for another touchdown, the latter converted by Sweeney.

Ponty managed a late riposte, at last making headway into Blues territory, only for the regional team to strike back, Cook going over for another close range try, converted from a wide angle by Sweeney to seal the victory by 6pts to 37.
