After enduring an early phase of Bridgend pressure, Pontypridd struck back with a fluent attack, forging their way over the opposite try line but penalised in the process.

Continuing in the ascendancy Ponty broke the deadlock after nine minutes when outside half Simon Humberstone hoisted over a penalty. That lead was cancelled out by a similar score from his Bridgend counterpart Dai Flanagan, but Ponty still holding the upper hand, looking strong in the set pieces and creative in the loose.

A dynamic break by centre Gavin Dacey again took Ponty over the line but the try disallowed. Undaunted, the home side continued to press forward and were rewarded as the impressive Simon Humberstone touched down and converted his own score.

Another exchange of penalties between Flanagan and Humberstone kept the score board ticking over, before Ponty capitalised on a line out steal followed by good support skills for replacement Tom Hetherington to cross for a try which Humberstone converted.

Having conceded points from another Flanagan penalty, Ponty finished the first half strongly, scrum half Lewis Jones darting over for a try which Humberstone converted to claim an interval advantage of 27pts to 9.

The game continued an entertaining affair after the break with phases of attack and counter attack emanating from turnovers. A concerted drive by the home pack took them over the line to secure a try from a collective effort but credited to no8 Owen Sheppeard and converted by Humberstone. A fracas amongst the forwards resulted in opposing props Stuart Williams of Pontypridd and Owen Williams of Bridgend sharing time in the sin bin, with the game advancing into its final quarter.

With the referee’s decisions mostly in their favour, Bridgend made headway into the home half and were rewarded with a try scored by no8 Matthew Llywellyn and converted by Flanagan. The final word however went to Pontypridd, applying pressure through an attacking scrum before hooker Huw Dowden burrowed over for a try, expertly converted by replacement Lewis Williams.

A productive night’s work for Pontypridd was reflected in their 41pts to 16 bonus point win.
