Pontypridd stepped up a gear or two in their league campaign with a six try romp against a competitive Bedwas side at Sardis Road.
Ponty struck early as centre Adam Thomas intercepted in the visitors’ half to race clear for a try converted by Kristian Baller with just three minutes gone. Another interception, and some fine support play by the home forwards allowed flanker Darren Waters to cross for a second converted score. In between, Bedwas had shown their intent by applying plenty of pressure on a hard working Ponty defence. As the game progressed, the home team were showing great enthusiasm in their approach, keeping play up in their opponents’ half, and further rewarded by two penalty kicks converted by Baller to register an interval lead of 20pts to 0.
By far the more creative entity, Ponty struck early after the restart, following a sharp break from winger Lewis Williams, as Baller sniped in for a try which he also converted. Ponty were now on a roll, driving hard into the visitors’ twenty-two, with a penalty try awarded following a concerted phase of pressure.
The game lost some of its momentum and pattern as numerous substitutions were made by both sides, and Ponty replacement scrum half Gavin Morris sin binned for a spear tackle. Bedwas then struck back against the general run of play with a try scored by scrum half Adam Williams and converted by Adam Greendale.
The final ten minutes however belonged to a dominant Pontypridd team, with centre Gary Williams pouncing on a Dean Gunter chip kick for a try, and Gunter himself adding the final touchdown which he also converted from wide out.
Ponty were well worthy of their bonus point win by 46pts to 7, an adequate reward for their aggressive and adventurous style of play.
