Pontypridd got the game off to a good tempo with scrum half Rhys Downes taking a quick tap penalty and putting width to his team’s play. Two early penalties kicked by outside half Dean Gunter edged Ponty into a six point lead, and with Wizards’ flanker Darryl Thomas yellow carded for infringing.
It took a full twenty minutes before either try line was threatened, and then it was Aberavon who put pacey winger Richard Carter in for a try in the corner. The contest was now a far more evenly balanced affair, and the visitors getting the better in terms of possession and territory. Two penalties well kicked by outside half Jamie Davies confirmed their ascendancy, putting Aberavon into an interval lead of 6pts to 11.
Conditions were deteriorating significantly as the afternoon wore on, and Pontypridd by now struggling to make any impact as the Aberavon eight put the game in a stranglehold. The contest was becoming bogged down in a midfield dog-fight, of which Aberavon were getting the better.
Ponty at last introduced some much needed momentum into their play and edged forward into their opponents’ twenty-two, only for Aberavon winger Carter to intercept and race clear for a crucial try which Davies converted with sixty-one minutes gone.
It was now to be an uphill struggle for Ponty, denied any meaningful possession and committing inevitable handling errors in the wet. Penalised in their efforts to gain parity, Ponty fell further behind to two Jamie Davies kicks which killed off the game as a contest. The Aberavon pack continued to show a greater appetite for possession in the loose and denied their hosts any opportunity even for a consolation score.
The end result on a damp and , for Pontypridd, a disheartening day was a comprehensive home defeat by 6pts to 24.
