Pontypridd Youth played host to Treorchy in the quarter final of the District Youth Cup on Friday evening 17th March.
In windy and wet conditions Ponty set out to get their season back on track and to put their recent disappointing league form behind them.
It was not to be in a competitive and hard fought encounter. It was Treorchy who struck first with a converted try whilst dominating the first quarter of the match. Ponty struck back with a well worked try of their own but were unable to get the extra points in the blustery conditions. The home team kicked on and pressed the visitors hard, and although they created opportunities to get on the score board they were so far unable to finish them off.
The second half saw Ponty maintaining pressure but unable to break down a determined Treorchy defence. There were fleeting opportunities for the hosts to score if the ball could have been worked wider and quicker, but those chances spurned.
Going into the final quarter of the game Treorchy pushed the home team back into their own twenty two and it was Ponty’s turn now to defend their line. Treorchy eventually got the ball out wide and straight running from their backs saw them score near the posts with the conversion added.
Although Ponty again laid siege to the visitors’ line late on they were unable to obtain any reward for their effort, going down to a disappointing cup defeat by 5pts to 14.
