Ponty Youth - a team growing in confidence
Ponty Youth - a team growing in confidence

Pontypridd Youth (seniors) continued on their excellent run of results with a victory against St Peters’ Youth on Saturday 8th March.

Pontypridd 24  - St Peters 3

Try scorers:Dan Deardon, Rhys Simms & Geraint Rowley

Conversions (3), penalty (1): Rhys Simms

St Peters came out at the start of the game with all guns blazing, putting Ponty under tremendous pressure. But with Ponty’s defence standing firm the Valley boys started to show their form. The pack began to dominate up front with good scrummaging from Mark Jones, Sam Oliver and Dale Pugh. The second row duo of Owen Kingsbury and Geraint Rowley had their work cut out with St Peters’ big lineout specialist, but kept to their task well. The marauding back row of Alyn Thomas, Dean Maisey and Dafydd Gristock pounced on any loose ball and were always on hand supporting the ball carrier.

Ponty dominance began to tell with the team going through the moves and centre Dan Deardon utilising his strength to power over the line, the try converted by Rhys Simms.  Good defence by Lewis Egal, winger Nathan Evans and new wing Casey Pitmann (on permit from Ponty Youth juniors) kept out attack after attack from the opposition, with Ponty making probing runs themselves on the counter. Halfbacks Sam Studley and Lewis Smith as usual put in leadership performances, orchestrating Ponty’s attacks.

The interval score stood at Pontypridd 10 St Peters 3.

After the break Ponty made a change at hooker, Ross Griffiths replacing Oliver, who had a great first half. Ross really made an impact taking numerous balls against the head in the scrum.

Another scintillating run by Simms saw him go over for Ponty’s second try, which he converted himself. Another substitution for Ponty was Mike Davies, who replaced Evans on the wing. Davies almost immediately ripped  the ball from his opposite number to be brought down short of the try line.

In the dying moments of the game tireless work by Ponty’s pack saw Rowley come up with the ball and drive over for a final try, converted by Simms.

This was another great all round  performance from a team who are gaining in confidence with every game. Once again it was very difficult to single out one player but special mention must be made of Sam Studley at scrum half and the maurading back row of Dean Macy, Dafydd Gristock and Alyn Thomas.

Final score - Pontypridd 24 - St Peters 3
