Ponty set up Neath clash

27.10.2002 Pontypridd beats Cardiff 15-9 and wins Pool B

Pontypridd are Pool B champions in the Celtic League after a 15-9 win over Cardiff. And their reward for finishing top of their group is a home quarter-final tie against Neath. (scrum.com)

Hero of a fine team effort was full-back Brett Davey, who kicked his team's five penalties. Pontypridd went on the attack from the kick-off and took the lead after three minutes with a Davey penalty after Kenneth Fourie had collapsed a scrum.

Iestyn Harris had a chance to level matters but his 30-metre kick hit the post and bounced back into play.

As the half developed Cardiff came more into the action and levelled with a penalty from Harris. But in the 21st minute Cardiff suffered a setback when prop Fourie received a red card for punching and nine minutes later the visitors also lost Peter Rodgers, who was yellow-carded for collapsing the scrum.

Davey edged Ponty in front with a penalty but Harris responded with a similar score when Richard Parks was yellow-carded for a professional foul.

Right on the break Davey struck his third kick to give his side a 9-6 advantage and two minutes after the restart 14-man Cardiff drew level with a Harris penalty.

But Davey responded with a similar score to put his side in front once more, and he then struck his fifth penalty
