Player’s Blog – Morgan Bosanko

I would never have predicted after the away win at Merthyr on March 7th that nearly six months later we would not have had a training session as a squad, let alone play another rugby match. It’s a very strange and different world to back then and one that nobody could have imagined this time last year.

It’s a real shame from a rugby perspective as the win at Merthyr was one of our best performances of the season, right up there with the home win against Cardiff. I think we were all looking forward to the run in to the end of the season, especially the cross border competition and the three trips up to Scotland. It would have been great to test ourselves against different opposition and an even better opportunity to bond further as a squad.

I think we all feel that last season was a bit hit and miss from a performance perspective, with some fantastic wins against Merthyr home and away and Cardiff at home, but there were also some poor performances, mainly away from home which really hampered us in challenging for the league title. If we can become more consistent next season I certainly think we have the talent and ability in the squad to be challenging for silverware.

From a personal perspective, last season was probably my best date before being cut short by the pandemic. It was my second season at Ponty and it was massive for me to break through into the starting team so it was a shame that it had to end early. The challenge next season will be to hold onto the shirt – with such fantastic competition in the squad it certainly won’t be easy.

During lockdown I’ve been lucky enough to continue working, albeit from home, but I know that has not been the case for everybody. It seems things are picking back up and hopefully we can get back to normal soon. There’s been plenty of running sessions over the last six months to keep the fitness up, with my local club Pontyclun allowing me to train with them over the last few weeks – so a big thank you to them!

Alongside the fitness sessions there have been weekly tennis matches with Rhydian Jenkins – although I will not be revealing the ongoing score… With gyms also opening back up over the last couple of weeks it’s been good to get back into it and I’m hoping that news of next season isn’t far away as I think we all are chomping at the bit to get back to Sardis.

The recent release of next season’s shirts has made me even more excited to get back playing. I think it’s a fantastic idea by the club and we will all be proud to wear the shirt to honour the NHS and key workers that have sacrificed so much over the past months.

A big thank you to all the supporters for last season and we hope to see you all back at Sardis sooner rather than later.
