McKenzie, Jack

Jack McKenzie was a forward, but did most of the goal-kicking while playing for Pontypridd in the last decade of the 19th Century.  

Had a mighty boot, and could kick goals from halfway (and with the type of heavy leather balls used in those days, this was no mean feat!). 

McKenzie also had the dubious honour of being one of the first recorded Pontypridd players to be sent off in a match.

The game between Mountain Ash and Pontypridd on 13th March 1897 was a torrid affair typical of the intense derby games played in the Glamorganshire Cup.

Four players - two from each team - were given their marching orders for fighting, with forward Jack McKenzie and winger Walter Davies both consigned to the Pontypridd rogues' gallery.

McKenzie played alongside Earnest George, and for a while formed a very successful Ponty pack.

McKenzie was, it is believed, a policeman.
