In memory of Gareth Jones - "Snid"
In memory of Gareth Jones - "Snid"

Pontypridd RFC is today coming to terms, as is the entire community of Welsh rugby, with the passing away of former Ponty and Neath scrum half Gareth Jones – better known to all his acquaintances as “Snid”.

The tragic news of Gareth’s passing came on the afternoon of 16th June, the twenty-eight year old finally losing his long battle to overcome a serious neck injury sustained whilst playing for Neath back in April.

The thoughts of everyone at Pontypridd RFC are today with Gareth’s young family. Memories of a hugely popular player will be cherished by all who remember him from his time with the club.

The following statement has been issued by Neath RFC:

“It is with deep regret that Neath Rugby have to announce that Scrum Half Gareth Jones passed away peacefully this afternoon, in the Heath hospital Cardiff. Gareth's family have requested that their privacy is respected at this very sad and difficult time for them all.”

  • Rest in Peace...

Sardis-Exile The times that I have yelled "Come on Snid" from the terrace. I will remember a player that had such a turn of pace that you just knew that something magical was going to come from him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and especially his young kids.

I think that there should be meaningful discussion now for a way to commemorate his life whether this would be a memorial match or a competition...whatever it is his contribution to Ponty, Neath and Welsh rugby in general should not be forgotten.

  • Sad loss

martyn lewis How can we help the family in this tragic time? Start a fund?

    • SWinks Very tragic and Gareth's loss must be very hard to bear for his family at such a young age and at the peak of his rugby career- why don't Ponty and Neath rugby clubs join together this once and hold a match against an invitation 15 to bring the supporters of both teams together to celebrate Gareth's life and his love of the game - all proceeds to go to his family.

Sian Too young to die, but your memory will live on in everyone who had the pleasure of being in your company and knowing you.

  • RIP Snid

Ponty.net Website Manager I had the pleasure of his company at the GTFM studios a few seasons ago - he was a larger than life character, and I got along with him famously. He would always make a point of having a quick chat whenever we saw each other from then on.

While he had the ability to ruffle feathers (!), his tenacity and dogged spirit on the field of play was something to be admired, and his commitment and passion were a shining example.

His loss with be profoundly felt, not only at Pontypridd and Neath, but across the wider Rugby-playing world.

    • Nelty My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Snid's family, great bloke who loved his family and his rugby. Got to know Snid during his time at Ponty, he was a wonderful person and even volunteered his time for the kids.

He presented my own son with a trophy at our annual presentation night a season or so ago, great guy who would do anything for anyone!

Goodbye Snid, you will be missed greatly by everyone who ever met you...
