Ponty Youth take on Garndiffaith
Ponty Youth take on Garndiffaith

A fourth impressive win on the trot left Pontypridd Youth firmly in the midst of a purple patch with a 47-7 victory against Garndiffaith at Sardis Road on Saturday 8th October.

The irrepressible home side scored at almost a point a minute during the first half and it took barely a minute for wing Joshua Edwards to register the first try after a flowing move across the Pontypridd backline left him with a stroll into the corner. Garndiffaith looked to enter into the attacking spirit during the early exchanges but the home team were three converted tries to the good within the fist quarter.

The second try followed a typical gain-line break from Adam Harcombe who popped the ball to the roaming Josh Edwards who shrugged off a couple of tackles to score his double and the third was a result of patient forward play close to the Garndiffaith line where both Joss Howatson and Jordan Eynon went close before stand-off Shane Hutchinson threw a long pass out to Dale Hughes up from full-back who in turn off-loaded to give Tom Robinson a try out wide.  The third consecutive conversion from James Nicholas was a fantastic touchline effort.

Garndiffaith were failing to keep a grip on the game as a contest but did manage to build a series of phases beyond the Pontypridd 22 metre line and were only denied by aggressive defence by the covering Dewi Kingsbury.  The home side’s lineout was again a safe supply of possession with Nathan Evans safely finding a variety of targets and scrum half Chris Jones accurately linking with his outside backs.

A Joss Howatson lineout take and drive provided the base from which Ponty scored their fourth try when Dale Hughes took a pass in midfield and weaved his way to within five metres of the visitors’ line before slipping the final pass to Adam Harcombe supporting on his shoulder.  James Nicholas made it four kicks from four.  The hosts were looking more clinical and disciplined than in previous weeks and capped the first half with a hat-trick for Joshua Edwards after good interplay between the back-row and three-quarters pulled the defence one way then the other.

The second half started brightly with some energetic drives by replacement prop Callum Reed and it took only a few phases before Pontypridd added to their tally with an impressive solo try for Dale Hughes who helped field a loose kick in his own half before sprinting half the length of the field to round the defence.

A second individual try this time for a scavenging Ieuan Evans pinching the ball off the Garndiffaith scrum-half brought the Pontypridd scoring to an end a full thirty minutes before the end of the game and the last quarter was characterised by a lack of focus and continuity from both teams.  The home team perhaps unsurprisingly appeared to lose concentration and Garndiffaith enjoyed their best period of possession and territory and scored a consolation but fully deserved try through a quick tap and sprint through the retreating defence by their second row.

The friendly fixture gave the Pontypridd coaches an opportunity to try some players in unaccustomed positions and run the rule over some new combinations and they were pleased to see the team run in some well worked and clinically taken tries.
