A senior member of the Pontypridd RFC squad, full back Gareth Wyatt will be given additional responsibilities next season as he helps out with the coaching duties at the club.
As a former international and regional level player, the vast experience gained by Wyatt during his long career will now be utilised in helping bring on the next generation of Ponty backs.
With the club’s assistant coach Paul John away on Wales Sevens duties for periods during the season, Gareth Wyatt will step up to plug the gap.
“It’s a great honour to be asked to take on some coaching duties with Pontypridd” said Wyatt. “I have learned a lot from our coaching team, and to be drafted in as part of that set up will be an exciting development for me.
“I have already completed my basic coaching levels, but am no expert and will have a lot to learn. The environment at Ponty will be the ideal place to do so. I would hate to look back in years to come with the regret of not having taken this opportunity.”
Wyatt will of course continue as a Pontypridd player, and will hope to replicate the fine form he showed during the club’s championship winning success of last season. During that campaign Wyatt made thirty-four competitive appearances – more that any other member of the squad.
“Carrying on as a player is still important to me” said Wyatt, “and I will see how the body holds out going into the coming season.
“We have made some good signings to strengthen the squad and it promises to be another exciting campaign for Ponty.
“The new challenge of helping out as a coach will certainly give me an added incentive – hopefully I can make a success of it and take that on into the future.”
