Pontypridd will make an overdue homecoming to Sardis Road as they take on Tonmawr in the third round of the SWALEC Cup on Saturday 18th February, a full six weeks after their last home game.
That fixture was ironically against the same opponents, in a league tie which Ponty won by 38pts to 7 to complete a season’s double over the Afan Valley club.
Defending their status as cup holders, Pontypridd will be eager to progress against a Tonmawr side who occupy bottom position in the Premiership table, but come to Sardis Road buoyed by two successive wins, over Treorchy in the last round of the cup and over Swansea in the league.
With a congested run-in to the end of the season in prospect, the Ponty management have commenced on a policy of squad rotation, following the premise that a change is as good as a rest. A batch of young talent, including full back Harley Thomson, outside half Lewis K Williams, lock Jordan Sieniawski, flanker Calum Thomas and no8 Owen Sheppeard are drafted into action.
There is a welcome return to action for centre Adam Thomas from a long term shoulder injury and scrum half Lewis Jones following a stint with the Blues senior squad. Andrew Jenkins will cover the no9 shirt as replacement on permit from Whitland. Also amongst the subs is prop Ken Knaggs having served his recent disciplinary ban.
The Pontypridd team selected to face Tonmawr is as follows:
15.Harley Thomson. 14.Lewis I Williams. 13.Adam Thomas. 12.Gary Williams. 11.Matthew Nuthall. 10.Lewis K Williams. 9.Lewis Jones.
1.Stuart Williams. 2.Huw Dowden. 3.Chris Phillips. 4.Jordan Sieniawski. 5.Ryan Savage. 6.Dan Godfrey – cpt. 7.Calum Thomas. 8.Owen Sheppeard.
Subs: Andrew Jenkins; Simon Humberstone; Gavin Dacey; Tom Hetherington; Wayne O’Connor; Chris Dicomidis; Ken Knaggs.
