Hailing from Tonteg, Wayne was educated at Bryncelynnog School from where he gained county honours and a final trial as a flanker with Wales Youth.
He represented Beddau and Treorchy Youth teams before venturing on a career with the British Army which lasted thirty-eight years, during which time he played representative rugby with clubs from Hanover to Hong Kong, with the Army and the Combined Services.
After qualifying as a Senior Coach to RFU and WRU standards, Wayne left the armed services and on his return home linked up with former acquaintance, Justin Burnell, to take on the post of team manager at Pontypridd at the start of the 2003/04 season.
Stepping down as Team Manager at the close of the the 2007/08 season, Wayne Cullen was elected to the Ponty Rugby Ltd Board of Directors in September 2008.
