Advancing into the home half straight from kick off, Pontypridd took the lead through a well struck Lewis Williams penalty. A lively encounter was in the offing as Cardiff counter attacked, before centre Gavin Dacey spearheaded a Ponty offensive, culminating in another penalty successfully converted by Williams.
After flanker Reuben Tucker led a Cardiff charge from the restart, the home team registered their first points as outside half Rhys Patchell struck over a penalty with ten minutes gone. Breaking through their opponents’ tackles, Cardiff maintained pressure and drew level as Patchell converted another penalty.
A long range penalty attempt from Lewis Williams was off target, but the Ponty pivot gaining territory with his well judged line kicks. Driving on from an attacking line out Ponty then spread the ball wide for winger Matthew Nuthall to squeeze in for a try in the corner, a touchline conversion added by Williams. The visitors were now in the ascendancy, a pop up pass from Lockyer releasing fellow centre Gavin Dacey on a run to the line, his try converted by Williams.
The Ponty pack were abrasive and the back line fluent as they continued to dominate, Lewis Williams then hoisting over an imperious drop goal to extend their lead. Cardiff responded with a late phase of pressure but held at bay by a determined Ponty defence, protecting their interval lead of 6pts to 23.
Ponty extended that lead just into the second half as Lewis Williams hoisted over another penalty. The visitors were playing with confidence through many phases and showing fine support skills, centre Dafydd Lockyer going over for a try, but called back for a knock on. Cardiff forged a concerted counter from broken play, centre Matthew John going over for a try which Patchell converted.
Poaching opposition line out ball, Ponty were soon back on the attack, but giving up the initiative through their own errors, and allowing Cardiff to pounce for another try scored by flanker Rory Watts-Jones and converted by Patchell.
The game had been thrown wide open but Ponty regaining composure as Lewis Williams put over a wide angle penalty on sixty minutes. The visitors then launched a counter foray at pace instigated by wing Chris Clayton, and Cardiff having centre Shaun Powell dispatched to the sin bin. Ponty continued to drive up to the home line, then powering over a five metre scrum for a try claimed by no8 Dan Godfrey and converted from the touchline by Williams.
An opportunist kick and chase attack again took Ponty right up to the home line, scrum half Rhys Downes burrowing over for a try which Williams converted, securing an emphatic bonus point victory by 20pts to 43.
