A Welsh presence in the semi finals of the British & Irish Cup is guaranteed as Pontypridd and Llanelli will go head to head in the quarter final round.
Ponty had long since qualified for the knock-out stages, and had claimed home advantage in the quarter finals as runaway leaders of pool D of the competition. Their opponents were to be the runners up in pool B, a position which Llanelli finally nailed as the group went down to the wire.
An away win by Bristol against Melrose by 26pts to 29 on Saturday 26th February secured top finish in pool B for the English Championship side, with Llanelli guaranteed the runners up spot.
In Ponty’s own pool D Ayr claimed a fine home win over Doncaster Knights by 23pts to 17 in a straight shoot-out for second place finish.
Pontypridd will now face Llanelli in an intriguing all-Wales battle in the quarter final round, the game to be played at Sardis Road on Saturday 5th March.
