On Sunday 9th August, Pontypridd retained their status as Abercynon Sevens champions after a successful afternoon’s rugby at Y Parc in the late summer sun.
Having progressed through the pool stage with a 26pts to 5 win over hosts Abercynon, a bye against Aberdare and a 33pts to 7 win over Bedlinog, Ponty faced Rhydyfelin in the semi final round. Another victory ensued for the in form Ponty team, this time by a margin of 14pts to 10.
With Aberavon having beaten Cardiff in an all Premiership semi final tie, Ponty faced the Wizards in the final decider. Tries by wing Lewis Williams, who scored twice, Ryan Savage and Owen Williams, with conversions added by Gary Williams and Dean Gunter, secured the victory, with Ponty deservedly claiming the tournament title, with a 24pts to 15 win.
Speed merchant Lewis Williams was nominated Player of the Tournament, having scored in every game, with an overall tally of five.
A young Pontypridd squad, coached on the day by player Gavin Dacey, did extremely well to retain the Abercynon Sevens title following a competitive, and entertaining afternoon’s rugby.
