Competition
Principality Premiership
Location
Talbot Athletic Ground

The wet and windy conditions prevailing at the Talbot Athletic Ground were sure to have an impact on the game, with both sides slogging out a stalemate battle in the middle of the park early on.

A Chris Clayton kick and chase attack gave Ponty some momentum upfield, but failing to turn pressure into points as Dean Gunter fell just short with a penalty attempt. The breakthrough for the visitors came after seventeen minutes as Gary Williams generated a midfield break, fellow centre Dafydd Lockyer up in support to cross for a try which Gunter converted.

Aberavon’s response was immediate, advancing into the Ponty twenty-two with outside half Jamie Davies slicing through for a close range try which he then converted from in front of the posts. The game remained competitive, with the home side finishing the first half strongly and rewarded as Davies slotted over a penalty to gain an interval lead of 10pts to 7.

The Aberavon pack muscled a greater share of possession going into the second period, and pressure once more turned into points as Jamie Davies put over an early penalty. As the weather deteriorated rapidly, a thunderstorm with a downpour of hailstones passing over Port Talbot, the home pack kept the ball tight and once more advanced into their opponents’ twenty-two, a series of drives culminating in a try scored by back rower Richard Morris.

Making numerous changes off the bench, Ponty put in the hard graft to contest a game that was now into its final quarter, but numerous errors and turnovers conceded blighting their efforts.

Despite making advances into the home twenty-two late on, Pontypridd could not make an impact and eventually conceded to defeat by 18pts to 7.
