It was with great sadness that all at Pontypridd RFC learnt of the recent passing of a good friend of the club – rugby reporter Phil Caddy.
Phil had been a correspondent for the Pontypridd Observer and Rhondda Leader for over thirty years, with his reports from Sardis Road also being used by the national press.
More than just a reporter on Ponty games, Phil was a true supporter, more often than not making his journeys to venues near and far with the Supporters’ Club trips. From Abertillery to Athlone, Phil was near enough an ever present wherever Pontypridd played rugby.
Nicknamed “scoop” Phil made many friends at Pontypridd RFC from amongst the players, committee and supporters. He always did his utmost to report fairly and to promote the club in the media both locally and nationally.
Ponty Rugby Media Officer Guto Davies paid the following tribute to Phil Caddy:
“Phil was in effect an additional member of the media team at Pontypridd. At all away games we would look out for each other, taking up a place together, sharing notes and information through the game.
“Phil was a reporter of the ‘old school’, always thorough in his reporting and analysis, but always with a touch of humour which was a welcome addition to any occasion. It was a great experience to be in his company.
Pontypridd RFC has lost a good friend and a dedicated supporters with the passing of Phil Caddy.”
Phil Caddy’s funeral will be held at the Glyntaff Cemetery on Friday 3d June at 2:15pm.
