Following a successful title winning campaign, the Pontypridd RFC Player of the Year 2012 was always going to be a keenly contested and prestigious award. And the winner was… try poaching winger Matthew Nuthall.
Speaking after the award presentation at the club’s Gala Dinner on Friday 6th July, ‘Nutz’ was extremely proud of his personal achievement in the context of the team’s collective efforts.
“This is a massive honour for me” said Nuthall. “There were so many players worthy of the award after such a great season, it means a lot to be chosen as Player of the Year.
“I suppose its easier for us in the backs, the ones who score the tries and claim the glory, to be nominated for an award like this. Its great that Pat Palmer as a tight head prop was voted as Players’ Player of the Year, proving that we have big performers right the way through the team.”
Nuthall’s record for the 2011 – 2012 season is testimony enough to his nomination as top performer. Making twenty-nine appearances, and more significantly crossing for fifteen touchdowns, far and away the club’s top try scorer, the winger’s contribution was notable.
In his second stint with Pontypridd, twenty-nine year old Nuthall is now a senior member of the squad, but by his own admission has had to rediscover himself over the past season.
“I went through a difficult two year spell suffering from injuries” said Nuthall, “but worked hard to get myself fit ready for last season. The hard work paid off and I enjoyed myself, especially as we had such a successful campaign winning the Premiership title.
“It’s a great honour to be named as Player of the Year. Hopefully I can carry on the same form into next season, along with the rest of the squad, as we want to maintain our momentum and to keep on winning trophies.”
